How months are counted
Months aren’t all the same length, so this adds calendar months, not a fixed number of days: the same day of the month, 12 months later. That is how leases, contracts and warranties count. Today is the starting point and isn’t counted. From today, 12 months happens to be 365 days, but 12 months can be anywhere from 365 or 366 days depending on when you start, which is why it isn’t the same as 365 days.
When the day doesn’t exist
Start on the 29th, 30th or 31st and the month you land in may be too short. Then the answer moves back to that month’s last day. February 29, 2028 plus 12 months is February 28, 2029. That is the usual reading, but if a deadline matters, check how your contract or lease defines a month.
What people count 12 months for
- One year from today. Twelve months from today is Saturday, October 30, 2027, the same date next year. A 12-month lease, a one-year warranty or an annual plan starting today runs to that day; the warranty calculator works one out from the purchase date.
- 365 or 366 days. A year of calendar months is 366 days when a February 29 falls inside it. The next one is February 29, 2028, so any 12 months that include it are a day longer.
- Anniversaries. The first anniversary of anything that starts today falls on the same date next year. The anniversary calculator counts the years, months and days since a date.

By the calendar: the same day of the month, 12 months on. If that day doesn’t exist in the final month, the answer is the last day of that month, so February 29, 2028 plus 12 months is February 28, 2029.
Is 12 months always 365 days?
Only when no February 29 falls inside it. Twelve months that include a leap day are 366 days. The next leap day is February 29, 2028.
Does it count today?
No. Today is the starting point. 12 months from today is the same day of the month 12 months later, not the day before it.
