What people count 12 weeks for

• The end of the first trimester, roughly. ACOG counts the first trimester to the end of week 13, but 12 weeks is when many people have the first scan (the nuchal translucency scan is done between about 11 and 14 weeks) and share the news. The due date calculator shows where you are.
• FMLA leave. The Family and Medical Leave Act gives eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period. Taken in one block starting today, it would run to Friday, January 22, 2027.
