About this countdown
Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, a federal holiday for remembering the Americans who died serving in the military. For most people it is also the unofficial start of summer. This page counts the days until the next one.
- Memorial Day 2027 is Monday, May 31.
- It falls somewhere between May 25 and May 31. The holiday moved to a Monday in 1971, which is where the three-day weekend comes from.
- At 3 pm local time there is a National Moment of Remembrance: one minute of silence, wherever you happen to be.
Questions people ask
How many days until Memorial Day?
The number at the top of this page, in whole calendar days with today not counted. It rolls on to next year by itself once the day has passed.
What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Memorial Day honors those who died in service. Veterans Day, on November 11, thanks everyone who has served.
Is Memorial Day the start of summer?
Unofficially. Pools open and summer schedules kick in that weekend. Astronomical summer starts later, on the June solstice, and there is a summer countdown on this site for that.
