How months are counted
Months aren’t all the same length, so this adds calendar months, not a fixed number of days: the same day of the month, 6 months later. That is how leases, contracts and warranties count. Today is the starting point and isn’t counted. From today, 6 months happens to be 182 days, but 6 months can be anywhere from 181 to 184 days depending on when you start, which is why it isn’t the same as 180 days.
When the day doesn’t exist
Start on the 29th, 30th or 31st and the month you land in may be too short. Then the answer moves back to that month’s last day. August 31, 2026 plus 6 months is February 28, 2027, and a year later, when February has 29 days, the same sum gives February 29, 2028. That is the usual reading, but if a deadline matters, check how your contract or lease defines a month.
What people count 6 months for
- The six-month passport rule. Many countries want your passport valid for at least six months after you arrive, or after you leave; others only need it valid for your stay. The State Department lists the rule for each country. For a trip starting today, the six-month rule means a passport valid until at least Friday, April 30, 2027.
- Probation and reviews. Six months is a common probation length, especially outside the US, and a usual point for a first performance review.
- Half a year. Dentists usually book cleanings six months apart. For a birthday six months on, the half birthday calculator uses the same calendar rule as this page.

Questions people ask
How is “6 months from today” worked out?
By the calendar: the same day of the month, 6 months on. If that day doesn’t exist in the final month, the answer is the last day of that month, so August 31, 2026 plus 6 months is February 28, 2027.
Is 6 months the same as 180 days?
No. Six calendar months are 181 to 184 days, so 180 days from today lands a day to four days earlier than six months from today.
Does my passport need six months left?
For many countries, yes, counted from the day you arrive or the day you leave. Some only need it valid for the length of your stay. The State Department’s page for each country gives the rule.
Does it count today?
No. Today is the starting point. 6 months from today is the same day of the month 6 months later, not the day before it.
Why do other sites give a different date?
Some add a fixed number of days, such as 30 per month, instead of calendar months. Others use the server’s date, which can be a day off from yours. This page adds calendar months to the date on your device.
