Questions people ask

When is the next bank holiday?

The table marks it by your own date. In 2027 the first is New Year's Day on Friday 1 January and the last is the Boxing Day substitute on Tuesday 28 December.

Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?

No. Scotland has Good Friday but not Easter Monday. It has 2 January and St Andrew's Day instead, and its summer bank holiday is at the start of August, not the end.

What is a substitute day?

When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, the next weekday becomes the day off. In 2027 that happens at Christmas, and in Scotland on 2 January, which moves to Monday 4 January.

Do I get bank holidays off?

There is no legal right to paid time off on bank holidays. Most employers count them as part of the 5.6 weeks of paid holiday full-time workers are entitled to, but your contract decides.
