How months are counted
Months aren’t all the same length, so this adds calendar months, not a fixed number of days: the same day of the month, 3 months later. That is how leases, contracts and warranties count. Today is the starting point and isn’t counted. From today, 3 months happens to be 92 days, but 3 months can be anywhere from 89 to 92 days depending on when you start, which is why it isn’t the same as 90 days.
When the day doesn’t exist
Start on the 29th, 30th or 31st and the month you land in may be too short. Then the answer moves back to that month’s last day. November 30, 2026 plus 3 months is February 28, 2027, and a year later, when February has 29 days, the same sum gives February 29, 2028. That is the usual reading, but if a deadline matters, check how your contract or lease defines a month.
What people count 3 months for
- Probation periods. A lot of US employers use a 90-day introductory period, which is not quite three months. From today, 90 days is Thursday, January 28, 2027 and three months is Saturday, January 30, 2027. Check which one your offer letter says.
- Quarterly taxes. The IRS deadlines for estimated tax are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15, which are not three months apart. Go by the dates, not the count.
- Visas and the Schengen rule. “90 days in any 180” counts days, not months, so three months in Europe can run a day or two over. The Schengen calculator checks a trip day by day.

Not quite. Three calendar months are 89 to 92 days, depending on which months they are. A probation period or a contract usually says which it means; if it says 90 days, count days.
