About this countdown
Diwali, the festival of lights, follows the Hindu lunar calendar, so it moves every year and usually lands in October or November. This page counts down to the main day, Lakshmi Puja, as Indian calendars give it.
- In 2026 Diwali is on Sunday 8 November, and the five days of the festival run from 6 to 10 November.
- The festival runs for five days, from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Lakshmi Puja, on the third day, is the one most people mean by Diwali.
- Temples outside India sometimes celebrate a day earlier or later, because the new moon arrives at a different local time. If the exact evening matters, check with yours.
