- When 26 January lands on a weekend, the public holiday moves to the Monday.
- The Australian of the Year is announced the evening before, on 25 January.
- For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the date is a day of mourning, and some call it Invasion Day or Survival Day. Whether to change the date is argued about every year.
