About this countdown
Summer in Australia starts on 1 December and runs to the end of February. That is the meteorological season, the one the Bureau of Meteorology uses and most Australians go by. This page counts down to it in your own time zone.
- 1 December 2026 is a Tuesday.
- The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, comes about three weeks later, on 21 or 22 December.
- School summer holidays start in mid to late December in most states, which may be the date you are really counting to.
- Daylight saving starts on the first Sunday in October in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, so the long evenings arrive before summer does.
