How it’s worked out
The calculator adds six calendar months to your birthday and keeps the same day of the month. Days until it are counted from today, so a half birthday tomorrow is 1 day away. The only catch is a birthday late in a month whose partner month is shorter. Then the half birthday moves back to that month’s last day:

Every other birthday has a half birthday on the same day number, six months on.
Who celebrates them
Mostly kids. A summer birthday means no party at school, so teachers often celebrate the half birthday instead. Families with a birthday right after Christmas sometimes hold the party on the half birthday in June instead. And plenty of adults just like an excuse.

When is my half birthday if I was born on August 31?
February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. February has no 31st, so the date moves back to the last day of the month. The same goes for August 29 and 30.
What is the half birthday of someone born on February 29?
August 29, every year. August always has a 29th, so a leap-day birthday has a fixed half birthday even though the birthday itself only comes round every four years.
Is a half birthday 182 days after my birthday?
Close, but not always the same day. Six calendar months are 181 to 184 days. This calculator uses calendar months, the way people say “six months after my birthday”. Counting 182 days instead usually lands within a day or two.
Why do schools celebrate half birthdays?
Kids with summer birthdays miss the class celebration, so many teachers mark their half birthday during the school year instead. A July 15 birthday becomes a January 15 cupcake.
