About this countdown
Tax Day is the deadline to file your federal income tax return, or ask for an extension, and to pay what you owe. It is usually April 15. The day count is calendar days; the clock counts to 11:59 pm on the day, in your own time zone.
- For 2026 returns, the federal deadline is Thursday, April 15, 2027.
- An extension (Form 4868) gives you until October 15 to file. It does not give you more time to pay.
- When April 15 falls on a weekend or a holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day in Washington, DC, on April 16, can push it back as well.
- Most state income tax deadlines are the same day, but not all of them. Check your state's revenue department.

Can I get more time to file?
Yes. File Form 4868 by Tax Day and you have until October 15 to send the return. You still need to pay what you expect to owe by the April deadline, or interest and penalties start adding up.
What if I live in a disaster area?
The IRS often pushes the deadline back for counties hit by hurricanes, floods or wildfires. Check the IRS disaster relief page to see if yours is one of them.
When is the tax deadline in Canada?
April 30 for most people. If you or your spouse are self-employed, you have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is still due on April 30.
