About this countdown
Election Day in the United States is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This page counts the calendar days until then, with today not included. Polls open and close at different times in each state, so the count is to the day rather than to a particular hour.
- The 2026 midterms: all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats (33 regular races and two special elections) and 36 governors are on the ballot.
- Election Day 2026 is Tuesday, November 3.
- Because of the "Tuesday after the first Monday" rule, the date is never November 1. The earliest it can be is November 2 and the latest is November 8.
- Most states open early voting or send out mail ballots weeks before. Each state sets its own registration deadline, and vote.gov lists them all.

When is the next election?
The next general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Local and special elections also happen at other times of year, so check with your county election office for anything else on your ballot.
Why is Election Day on a Tuesday?
Congress picked it in 1845. Many voters then were farmers who needed a day to travel to the county seat. Sunday was for church and Wednesday was market day in a lot of towns, so Tuesday left time to get there and back.
Is Election Day a federal holiday?
No. A few states make it a state holiday, and many states require employers to give time off to vote, but the rules are different in each one.
What are the midterms?
The elections halfway through a president's four-year term. Every House seat and about a third of the Senate are up, along with many governors and state offices. After 2026, the next midterms are in 2030.
