Most US warranties count from the purchase date on the receipt. There is no legal minimum: the length is whatever the maker promised.

How the end date is worked out

The warranty length is added to the start date, so a one-year warranty on something bought on 1 October 2026 runs until 1 October 2027. If the date doesn’t exist in the final month, it ends on the last day of that month: a two-year warranty from 29 February 2028 ends on 28 February 2030. To be safe, get a claim in before the last day.

United States

A US warranty lasts as long as the maker says. There is no federal minimum, and a written warranty is voluntary. Most electronics come with one year; extended warranties and service contracts are a separate, paid product. Keep the receipt, since the clock usually starts on the purchase date printed on it.

United Kingdom

In the UK your rights come from the Consumer Rights Act and run against the shop, whatever the manufacturer’s warranty says. Choose the UK in the calculator to see the three dates that matter:

Most people find out their warranty has ended when something breaks. Put the end date in the Countdown app and you’ll see the days left on your iPhone’s home screen, with a reminder in the last weeks, so a small fault gets looked at while it’s still covered.

Questions people ask

Does a warranty start from the purchase date or the delivery date?

It depends on who gives it. Most manufacturer warranties, Apple’s included, run from the purchase date on the receipt. In the UK, your legal rights against the seller run from delivery. If you took the item home the day you bought it, the two are the same.

How long do I have to return faulty goods in the UK?

You can reject a faulty item for a full refund within 30 days of delivery. In the first six months the fault is presumed to have been there all along, so the seller has to repair or replace it unless they can show otherwise. After that you can still claim for a fault, but you have to show it was there from the start, for up to six years (five in Scotland).

What is the Consumer Rights Act 6-year rule?

It is the time limit for taking a claim, not a six-year warranty. Goods have to last as long as is reasonable for what they are; a cheap kettle isn’t expected to last as long as a fridge. Six years is simply the latest you can bring a claim.

Is there a legal minimum warranty in the US?

No. Federal law doesn’t require a written warranty or set its length; that is up to the maker. What you do get in most states is an implied warranty that the item works as it should, and its length depends on state law.

Is my warranty still valid if I bought it used?

It depends on the maker’s terms. Many warranties go with the product and run from the first buyer’s purchase date; some only cover the original buyer. Check the warranty card or the maker’s website with the serial number.
